Science & Efficacy
## Evidence‑based antibacterial activity
**Selective antibacterial activity** – A Drugs.com monograph reports that manuka oil exhibits selective antibacterial activity against Gram‑positive bacteria, particularly Staphylococcus aureus. While some laboratory studies have explored wound‑healing and anti‑inflammatory benefits, clinical trials are still lacking. This means manuka oil can be a valuable ingredient for cleansing the skin and supporting skin health, but it should not be marketed as a cure or treatment for disease.
**Potency versus tea tree oil** – A white‑paper summary notes that manuka oil demonstrated strong antibacterial activity against Gram‑positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus hominis in minimum‑bactericidal‑concentration tests. In the same tests, manuka oil was more than 12 times more potent than tea tree oil against Propionibacterium acnes (0.102 % vs. 1.25 % concentration needed to achieve a bactericidal effect). This suggests that the high triketone content makes manuka oil particularly effective at suppressing bacteria that contribute to skin blemishes.
## What this means for our products
- Support rather than cure – These studies indicate that manuka oil can help create a more favourable environment for the skin by reducing certain bacteria. However, because clinical evidence is limited and results are primarily from laboratory tests, we focus on supporting skin health rather than claiming to cure any medical condition.
- High triketone advantage – The unique β‑triketones in New Zealand East‑Cape manuka oil are associated with its antibacterial efficacy. Compared with tea tree oil and other essential oils, manuka oil requires much lower concentrations to achieve a bactericidal effect in vitro.
- Responsible use and formulation – Manuka oil should be used topically and diluted appropriately. Customers should avoid ingestion, and those with sensitive skin should perform patch tests before use.
## Moving forward
NZ Country Manuka will continue to monitor scientific research and update our formulations and messaging in accordance with evidence‑based findings. By prioritising transparency, we empower customers to make informed choices about their wellness routines while complying with advertising standards and regulations.
